Welcoming Brunch at Maroubra Beach

Rebecca from Jeremy's office put together a little welcome to Australia brunch for us down at Maroubra beach. We dined on wonderful food and then got to walk down to the beach (that we live only minutes from) and watch the huge waves crashing in. We still can't believe that we get to live here!

Day 15: Saturday

Fun with the Linkous Family!

We finally got together at Tommy Dean's house and met his beautiful family, for a little Aussie barbie. Tommy's wife Annita and I played with their children Asher, Zara and Ava along with little Harper of course. They have a beautiful home and we spent the day talking, going for a walk at the park near their home and eating really great food.

We talked about everything: how we all met our spouses, our weddings, having babies, and jobs...

Day 14: Friday

Jeremy had the day off so we went and met with the cleaning crew at the Howard House to talk to them about what we wanted done. We also talked to our property agent who told us we couldn't paint the house, even at our expense, because the owner didn't think it needed it. So mad! Still meeting with a painter this afternoon though to get a quote in case they change their minds. We have apparently offended our new land lords by saying the house was dirty and wanting to make improvements to it.

We measured the house for furniture and hopefully when our things arrive it will look much better...

Day 13: Thursday

Shopping Day Part Two!

Tommy Dean came and got Harper and I for another round of heavy shopping for the house today. He called up the Grandson of a major appliance chain here in Australia, Bing Lee, and he met us at the store to make sure I was taken care of. I think when they saw my list of items to buy they were very happy....

That list included: t.v., DVD player, washing machine, dryer, fridge, microwave, Dyson, dust buster, printer, iron, 2 space heaters, warranties to go with and of course they threw in a soccer ball for Harper :)

The prices were negotiable, so cool! I think we walked away with quite a deal as with delivery and everything above cost $3600. Oh, did I mention we also received a years supply of laundry soap?!

Day 12: Wednesday

Locked myself out of the rental, in my pajamas, with Harper inside (sleeping in her cot at least)! Thankfully the professors from Germany were upstairs, with their house guests, and I was able to use their phone to call the landlord and beg them to come over and let me in. Nothing like having a cup of tea with strangers in your night clothes to start a morning!

Finally got my mobile phone today! It only took 3-hours....I thought I was going to have to give them a blood sample or hand over Harper. But I have my beloved Iphone again. Here, you rent your Iphone, you don't have to buy it. Pretty cool :)

Here is a little Harper love.....

Day 11: Tuesday

Howard House Day!

We all went to get the keys and get a look at our new home today! I was very nervous as I had yet to see the inside, remember Jer picked this out by himself. We signed the paperwork and headed over....ummmm Aussie clean is not American clean.

Howard House

The house, while I know I am a little nutty on how clean things are, was gross. The tenants before us were disgusting pigs, end of sentence. After talking to the agent, they are going to get a professional crew of cleaners in to help but I know it is going to take awhile before Jeremy and I are comfy in the level of cleanliness. I have put in our requests for improvements for the house and we will see if any are doable. I just hope we can paint the horrible pink walls...

At least Harp can find humor in this ;)

Odd Things So Far....

Just a few things that I have noticed to be "different" here:

-the keys, or at least some of the keys look like "U"s

-the light switches

-they have voiced over U.S. commercials with Aussie accents (the red-headed Glade woman for one...)

-Same products, different names (Degree is called Rexona here)

-tipping is not required or expected in restaurants...servers make at least $15 an hour, get health insurance and get a retirement fund that never goes away if they leave their job

-child care is wonderful, expensive, and extremely hard to get into....we are on several waiting lists

-beer is stupid expensive ($15.00 for a 6-pack)

-Aussie's only wear Uggs as house slippers

-getting a cell-phone here is harder than getting a drivers licenses in the States....I had to give them my visa info, medical insurance proof, bank account approved statement, passport

-when you want to rent a property you have to get the "inspection time" from the agent, be there for the 15 minutes that they have it open and then apply and cross your fingers

-when you rent a property it is common for you to have to supply your own fridge

Day Eleven: Sunday

Mother's Day!

We woke up to the reminder that too much wine equals a very soft (hung-over) tomorrow! Jeremy was wonderful to me all day and took care of baby, did laundry, cooked and cleaned while I perched on my throne for the day as queen.

We had our first pizza in Australia and oh-boy is it different! The sauce is very minimal and the pepperoni here is tiny. I will be having pizza for sure when I come home for a visit!

Waking up Mother's Day with my sweet angel

Day Ten: Saturday

I got to sleep in! Harper has been killing us with her non-sleeping schedule she has taken up this week.

Went for a lovely walk to our "new" home and discovered Jer's path to work that he will take when we move into the Howard house.

Did find an amazing place in "The Spot" called The Spanish Fly. Their tapas are great and the sangria even better :)

Stayed home, drank wine and played Wii all night long....

Day Nine: Friday

Shopping Day!!!

Tommy Dean picked little Miss Harper and I up and took us to the Westfield Shopping Centre to do a bit of heavy shopping. The shopping centre (mall) was very similar to that of a US mall, but it had grocery stores, butchers, bakers and all of the clothing stores were of brands I have never heard of.

Tommy helped me pick out my Mother's Day gift, a Wii, and get all of the items that go with it. We fell in-love with the Wii at Johnell and Russ's house so of course we HAD to get one for here.

Played Wii all evening and took care of our child who will not sleep for more than 2-hour spans anymore!

Day Eight: Thursday

What a lovely day! Harper and I stayed home and cleaned the rental (again) and then we got all dressed up to meet Jeremy at UNSW for an awards reception. We got lost trying to navigate to his office. We spent most of the journey trying to navigate the very steep campus while I was in heels and Harper was in her pram (stroller). Too many stairs to have a gone the way we did!

The awards reception was beautiful and it was wonderful to meet Jeremy's co-workers and overlook the city at the venue. Harper was the hit of the party and was a perfect angel in her cute little outfit. She loved the balloons! I didn't realize that the man I spent the majority of the time speaking to was the 2nd in charge of the entire Uni (university). Jeremy thought it best not to interject our conversation to let me know who he was.

Day Seven: Wednesday

Not much to report as of yet, still acclimating to Oz and the differences that are involved with living on the other side of the planet and in a new country.

Jeremy went off to work and Harp and I stayed at home during the day. I looked online and discovered that I was in fact looking at the Southern Cross last night. It is so much smaller than I thought it was going to be.

Side note on Harp: she is now doing a "version" of waving to say hello and goodbye. It looks like a limp-wrist wave a queen would do :)

Tuesday, May 4, 2010

Day Six: Tuesday

Jeremy went to work early and Harper and I played at home before her nap this morning. We are meeting Jeremy at 11:45am on campus to set up our bank account. We find it so odd that moving money from the States to AU is so difficult and is ridden with fees and how long it can take. So annoying!

After returning home Harper didn't want to take an afternoon nap, but we did get to talk to Mum on the phone. So nice to hear her voice.

When Jeremy got home from work we went to Coles to shop for food and on the way stopped by a flower stand. They have flowers here I have never heard of or seen before. Just amazing.

We hung out at home, had bread, lox and cheese for dinner, and I ironed Jeremy's clothes for work. It's nice that things seem to be normalizing just a bit.

Day Five: Monday

Jeremy's first day of work

Jeremy had his very first day at UNSW today. He left at 8am to be at work by 9am, we live across the street from campus, literally. Needless to say he was very excited. When he got to work he met with Prem and got his new laptop and he was able to open our bank account during his lunch hour.

Giant Ibis birds in our backyard

Harper and I went to turn in the application for the Howard house at 9am, we were told we should hear back this afternoon. After turning in the application Harp and I went window shopping. The streets were not as busy as the other day so I wasn't as nervous walking around. I can't believe this is winter here, it is so hot! We packed all wrong.

At around noon we got the call that we did get the Howard house, I hope the inside is nice.

Momma and Harper lovin on each-other

Jeremy came home just after 5pm and said he had a wonderful first day of work. His office has a huge window. I think jet-lag is getting to me as I went to bed at 8pm. Jeremy talked to Tommy on the phone and my sweet baby slept through the night!

Big U.S.A. stories being aired in A.U.:
-BP oil spill: all blame being put on BP as they claimed it. No one is blaming the President or the government like they are in the U.S.A.
-attempted Times Square bombing

Day Four: Sunday

We finally found an internet cafe, the Night Owl, and hit up the internet and sent out a few emails and found Facebook. It was so nice to reconnect for just a few minutes. $3.00 an hour for internet for those who are interested.

We packed up the family and taxied down to Coogee Beach for lunch. Taxi from 34 High Street was about $8.50. We drug Harper's pram across the beach, a labor of love for sure, and picked a beautiful spot on the beach. It took Jeremy just a few seconds to jump into the ocean and Harper just a few minutes to realize that she could "eat" the sand. We like to think that she thought it was a large cookie that was crumbled up. Just next to us was life guard training, a fun experience for me as I am sure the topless beach-goers were for Jeremy. Jeremy said the quote of the day came from me when I said "this makes Tulum look like a crack house!" This place is so beautiful and we live here. We both agree that if you want to see us you are going to have to come visit. This day totally makes the spider attack worth it! We even saw an old fashion pirate ship sailing by.

Morgan and Harper

After going home we headed out to the "Spot" for dinner having pre-dinner drinks and tapas at The Spanish Fly. Harper was so wonderful just lounging with her parents. People are very tolerant of children here and didn't bat an eye at her or her giant stroller. We then went next door for dinner where my wonderful daughter proceeded to break a dinner plate on the ground. Again, everyone was so wonderful, they didn't care that she broke the plate. Our waiter just said "kids will be kids." Jeremy had scallops that were served with their entrails and "feet" still on them. Just another thing to get used to I guess :)

Day Three: Saturday

Jeremy & Harper

Oh dear lord! A giant spider fell on me in the laundry last night, on the face! AHHHHHH! I swiped it off, but it got away. Lucky for me Jeremy found it and killed it. When I talked to Mum and Dad last night (Blair and Candy) I told them about it and Mum asked me when I was catching the next flight home.

Spider that fell on my face that Jeremy hunted down

Thought we had an avocado tree in our backyard but it turns out it was just a rock on the ground that just looked like one. I am a little sketchy about going up to things right now after the spider incident.

Jeremy went out today to try and find us a new place to live. The way rental property works here is that you have 15 minutes to go see a property at a given time set by the property management. If you like the place you then put in an application to rent the property along with bank statements, citizenship and a whole slew of other documents. I met him at the last place and it was pretty scary the "show" condition these places are in. Jeremy thinks he found us a place to live on Howard Street. We walked by it on our way to "the Spot" to have lunch and gelato. It looks nice, but again hard to tell. It did make me "homesick" for our old house that had such great curb appeal as this one does not.

11 Howard Street

Harper and I went out today while Jeremy was house hunting and I totally got lost. I went to find a place to buy a hair dryer and took a wrong turn somewhere. But thankfully we found our way out! Funny side note; our Graco stroller is WAY too big to fit into any of the stores here. All of the prams that I have seen are the really fancy ones that are over 1k in the States. I really want my McClaren in the container ship!

The "Spot"

The "Spot"

Interesting things we discovered today:
-to get a cell phone you have to prove your Visa status, have a local bank account and health care (you have to prove it with a medical card)
-IPhones are free with your phone contract
-You can fry your Chi even with an adapter here, you have to have a voltage converter
-You don't tip at restaurants, the staff make $15 an hour, get health insurance and get retirement payments that don't go away when they change places of work
-at 5:30pm every night bats fly over head, they are huge, & we don't know where they are going

Day Two: Friday

Woke up at what we thought was 6am, turns out the clock in our flat was not reset after daylight savings and it was actually 5am. Getting up that early on my own was something new. We soon figured out the time and Harper and I went back to bed. It is funny, but what Jeremy was feeling yesterday, the dizziness and “off kilter-ness” I now understood. I felt like I had just gotten off a rollercoaster or a long boat ride. It is as if my center of gravity is completely off track. It must be the gravitational pull of being on the other side of the planet, but who knows. At least we are not jetlagged and Harper has adjusted beautifully. We almost have her back on her old schedule!

I hate that I don’t have Internet access yet, but very happy that the adapters that I purchased before our trip our working on our laptops as I would have gone a little more bonkers not being able to access photos and write. I feel almost naked without my Iphone. I feel like my connection to the outside world has been amputated. Kind of like when we go on vacation and purposefully leave our phones at home. Only, it’s a permanent vacation! Hopefully the phone and Internet issues will be solved soon.

A few photos of our flat....

Harper's room, we moved one of the beds to the study to make room for her crib

Around 10am, Jeremy’s dear friend Tommy came over and picked up the Grace family for a little adventure. We loaded up Harper in her car seat and I went to the wrong side of the car to get into the passenger front seat! I have a feeling that is going to be happening for a while. When Tommy started driving I got a little carsick from the “off” felling of being on the left side of the car with no wheel in front of me. I can’t even begin to tell you how weird it was driving on the other side of the road! They have the oddest street lines here. That is going to have to be an entry on its own.

Tommy drove us around Bondi, Bronte, Coogee, Clovelly and then drove through Centennial Park and caught a glimpse of the Harbor Bridge. Jeremy saw the Sydney Opera House but I missed it. We stopped at Bronte Beach and had a lovely brunch at a café right across the street from the ocean and watched surfers on the huge waves due to the inclement weather we experienced today. I had a wonderful Eggs Benedict served with organic eggs so the center yolks were orange, a little shock for me as I have never seen that before, and it was served with a small salad. Jeremy had an ABC omelet (avocado, bacon and cheese) and it came with “brown” bread (wheat) and the omelet was served on top of the toast. When the set it down Jeremy asked where his toast was, yep we are defiantly not from here. The lattes were wonderful and my tea just great. Side note; the lattes are served in glasses like water would be served in.

We really wish Tommy didn’t work away from Sydney so much so we could see him more. His diary for the next few months is so booked we probably won’t be able to make it out to his home for a barbeque until June. Tommy is a stand-up comedian if I haven’t mentioned that before. We are waiting to hear him on a weekly radio show he does. He said that is going to give us a little “shout out.” Will update on that later.

Well it’s 4:30pm and we are still waiting for our 7 bags that American Airlines lost…..

5pm Sydney time, our bags are finally here! Never been so happy to see so much luggage. Jeremy is unpacking as I type. Tommy’s show just started so off to listen!

Tommy just mentioned us “On Air!” Pretty cool since we have only been here 24 hours and we are being announced by a celebrity J

Landing in Australia

Eagle, we have landed!

After being trolleyed to the customs area, I collected the pram that we gate checked while Jeremy dealt with our missing baggage. Qantas was so wonderful, they gave us $300 to make up for American Airlines losing our bags. After getting through customs via the Express Lane (yea Harper), we were greeted by Prem, Jeremy’s new boss and his dear high school friend Tommy Dean at the airport. Tommy was on his way to catch a flight to do a TV. show so we only had a moment to say hello. Prem wanted to make sure that the driver was there to take us to our new home and welcome us to UNSW. How many new bosses do this?! She is just wonderful and I was very glad to finally meet her.

After going to baggage services and filing our claim for our lost baggage our driver loaded us up and drove us to 34 High Street, our temporary home. It was bit strange and little “sea-sick” to drive on the “other” side of the road. We were reminded several times that it wasn’t the “wrong” side; it was the “other” side. It was just really weird turning and the road lines are very different than the states (a zigzag indicates a pedestrian crossing ahead). One interesting thing, the street signs are green, nice to see something familiar. Sydney so far looks like a mix of Miami and San Diego with the weather and palm trees.

Morgan and Harper on the car ride to 34 High Street

We arrived at our new flat and were greeted by a member of Prem’s staff to let us in and it was not as bad as I was expecting, a lot like college. It was not as clean as I would have preferred, but it was bigger than I thought. After taking the tour Jeremy and I, along with Harper, went to go purchase cleaning supplies and I spent the next few hours fighting jet lag and scouring the apartment. The cleaning supplies here smell different here. In fact it just smells a little different here in general. I am sure that it will go away in a few weeks. We really wanted to go see the beach today but we will do that later this week. I wish they had a better vacuum here. I miss my Dyson!

Harper enjoying a little no clothes time at the new flat

Harper learning what a drawer is, she learned quickly that it can smash your fingers!

We were able to have a little USA normalization by watching M.A.S.H. on television and by listening to American music on the radio. Pretty much all the music we have heard here is from America. When shopping at the grocery store Jeremy I were amazed by how much everything costs here. We were just going down each aisle with our mouths open, we must have looked really out of place. For example, Suave shampoo, which in the States is only $1-2, is over $6AU here. I purchased Pantene because it was cheaper!

Jeremy on the "sweets" aisle, the carts here are four wheel drive and you pass on the left

Yes Mum, there are ceiling fans here :) Jet-lag didn't really get to me, but Jeremy and Harper did take a long nap today. I am trying to think that it is mind over matter.

Flight from Dallas, Texas to Sydney, Australia via L.A.

After a lovely dinner at Cool River in the airport we hopped over to the gate and waited for our delayed American Airlines flight (shocker, they are ALWAYS late). When the pilot finally was ready to leave he went on the intercom and gave us a 5-minute detailed speech as to why he was late. We were not amused. We landed in Los Angeles with just moments to board our Sydney flight. Qantas on the other hand, was amazing. The moment we got off the AA flight they came for us and guided us to a trolley and got us to our flight. I am still amazed as to how wonderful the ground crew was!

crossing the international dateline

We were in the 63rd row of the 747, which would be the back of the plane for those of you not familiar with “economy” or coach as Americans are used to. Jeremy was across the aisle from Harper and I and ended up having the whole row to himself. That came in handy later when I took a sleeping pill and laid out for 7 hours. Again, I cannot express to you how WONDERFUL the Qantas flight crew was to us. Anything we needed, done. Play with the baby, gave us extra snacks, drinks, done. They even had a trolley waiting for us at the other end of our flight to drive us to customs since they knew something we didn’t. That something was…all of our 7 bags were still in L.A.!

Almost time to board...

April 25th we loaded up the last of our things in Jeremy’s rental and in my Benz, cleaned the home that we had lived in for the last 9 months and hit the road for Garland to spend the last two days of our stay in the states at my parents. I didn’t get sad when leaving the neighborhood or Kingwood so much, but I was sad to leave the house that we worked so hard on and that we had brought Harper home from the hospital. We couldn’t have asked for better or nicer neighbors, but on to better and more adventures. I just don’t see us as “suburban” folk and I believe that we did need to live in one to realize that about ourselves. I will always love the photos and feeling we had when we purchased it, but I would rather live in a flat in the city than a house in the “burbs.” I really hope the new owners enjoy the house and all that we did to it. I would hate to think they came in and changed everything that we did! But again, not my house anymore and not my 2500 square feet to clean either!!!!

We had two wonderful days with my parents and we had some of the most amazing meals cooked on my Dad’s new EGG cooker thing. It’s kind of like a barbecue but not. But it does great things to ribs. It was a bit hard to leave on the 27th to the airport, as I had to repack all of our things, but mostly leaving my parents. They drove us to the airport and left us at the giant wishbone at the DFW international gate.

Before we left...a few notes before the flight

Before the flight.....

Jeremy telling me we are officially leaving: I was at our home in Kingwood, Texas watching the painters touch-up paint from the new granite installation earlier that week and I got a phone call from Jeremy. He was in New York interviewing for a position at UNSW. Quite simply said, he got the job! He told me that they wanted him there by May and the wheels just started turning as to what we had to do to make that happen. We spent the next five weeks working our tails off and working with the immigration lawyer, Aristotle, to become legal in Australia. The officials argued our marriage license, as we only have the one document in Texas, that was fun.

Putting the house on the market: Jeremy told me we were moving on a Friday, our house was staged and ready to go on the market at 2pm the next Wednesday. The agent who sold our home to us put us back on the market 8 months later. Jeremy and I worked tiredly the entire weekend and even had to call in my father to watch Harper for me so I could get all of the finishing touches complete. You cannot imagine how hard it is to cleanout, stage and put your house up on the market with an 8 month old! But the payoff was worth it in my mind as our realtor and others said it showed like a model home.

movers loading up our container

Selling off our things: Jeremy and I went through our large and very full home and had to make the tough, and sometimes easy, decision as to what goes with and what we would need to sell. I went onto two Kingwood “sell your stuff” websites and as I listed items they sold. Items that we didn’t sell we gave away. It was nice to be able to purge ourselves of things so we could start anew in Australia. It was also very sad to see things we loved leave with someone new. Australia has very strict laws about what can and cannot come with you and all of our wicker and untreated wood could not come with us. I thought there was going to be a riot over a wicker storage basket that we got at Target. Who knew?!

Saying “see you later” to friends: We were very fortunate to get to say, “see you later,” not “goodbye,” to a number of friends and family members before we left. Thank you so much for either coming to see us or for hosting us before we left!

-Joe: It was such a treat for Jeremy and I to have you meet Harper and see us off. Thank you again for teaching Harper how to “cough.”

-Johnell and Russ: Y’all were so wonderful to have us at your home. Meeting Ashton and spending time with the divine Miss M was just the cherry! The steaks you made still make me hungry when I think about them.

-Kelie: Lunch was great in Austin, but having you come out and spend time with us in Houston before we left was amazing. Thank you for coming all the way out and for helping me with the house.

-Uncle Neal: Thank you for coming down even if you didn’t get to go camping. The photos of Harper and you playing the guitar are going to be treasured forever! We expect you to come to Aussie land soon.

-Ron and Sirenda: Oh what a treat to see you both! I hope you didn’t look too “Clampet” driving back to Arizona in Jeremy’s truck. It was so nice that Ron was able to see little Harp before we left and it was great to hang out as a family.

-Aunt Sue: If you hadn’t come to the rescue I would have probably lost all of my hair that Friday before we left! Thank you for taking Harper and for giving us one last squeeze before our departure.

-BigDaddy and Granbobbie: It was so hard to watch you drive away, but I am so glad that you were able to come down and see us. Dinner was perfect, the talks were wonderful, and we love you both so much.

-Mum and Dad: Love you, couldn’t have done it without you. The two nights we spent at your home before we left were some of our favorites. The food, fun and conversation were great. Thank you Thank you Thank you!

-Jennifer, Keith and Scarlett: Oh Ms. Jen, thanks for “rallying” me J, Keith, thank you for your help, and Miss Scarlet thank you for being so gosh darn cute!

We wish we could have seen more of you before we left, but such is life. We love you all!
